A feature article in the September 17, 2016 issue of Vintages showcases Foreign Affair Winery as an innovator with the production of Apologetic Red.
In the article Len Crispino, proprietor of Foreign Affair Winery, is quoted, “When we began Foreign Affair in 2001, we wanted to add something new to the range of great wines being made here, so we focused on producing only appassimento-style wines… there was no guidebook to follow in Ontario, and we lost a lot of grapes to missteps in the early years. Grape drying is an exacting process, and there are no shortcuts. Over time, we developed a 57-step ‘continuum of care’, from vineyard to bottle, to ensure quality at all stages. We now make red and white appassimento wines, and we are the first to produce an Amarone-style rose. It has been a hard road, but challenging expectations is how you grow.”
Moosimo is the larger-than-life Canadian moose that greets visitors at the entrance to the winery. He arrived at the winery in 2015 and has already appeared in hundreds of photos and has become a social media darling! Visit Moosimo anytime (he’s like our doorman) and to taste and buy wine, visit us inside the winery 7 days a week from 11 am and 5 pm.

An astonishing world-class wine, made by talented, hardworking, law-abiding, polite, friendly, pragmatic, peace-loving, apologetic, grateful and self-deprecating Canadians.
We are committed to quality at the highest level and an experience that will leave our guests with memorable and lasting memories. Our full bodied and elegant wines are the result of patience, passion, and care. This is what our unique process is based on a slow process yielding the rich complexity that can only result from a non-hurried approach. Hence why our wines are often referred to as “slow wines” achieved by the highest quality fruit and a meticulous “continuum of care” from vineyard to bottle to service.

Varietal: Cabernet Franc
Appassimento: 52% with 125 days drying time
Bottle Size: 750 mL & 1.5 L Magnum
Aromas: Sweet, rich aromas of cherry compote, black currant, ripe black cherry, dried fig, cigar tobacco, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, baking spices, and smoky oak notes.
Palate: Elegant, rich, and intense flavours of dried fig and cherry, layered with fresh ripe fruit flavours of black cherry, black currant, and mission figs. On the very full mid palate the spice, dark chocolate, and velvety smooth tannins come to your attention and the finish lingers forever revealing a multitude of subtle nuances for you to discover. There is fantastic balance between the fruit, tannins, acidity, and oak.
Food pairings: May we suggest serving this wine alongside roasted or grilled red meats, especially wild game such as venison, elk, bison, and wild boar, as well as lamb, osso buco or prime rib. It is also an elegant accompaniment to cured meat and fine hard cheeses or enjoy on its own after time in the decanter.
Cellaring: This wine will age in the cellar easily for 5-10+ years and is drinking very well now. For the patient collector, and under proper conditions, the 1.5L magnum format allows for much slower aging.
