Dream 2012

Find our 2012 Dream (appassimento Bordeaux style blend) in select LCBO Vintages stores.  As the very first offering of the 2012 vintage,  this limited release is expected to sell out quickly!

93 points – Matt Steeves, Certified Sommelier:

Foreign Affair Winery is the pioneer in appassimento winemaking in Canada. After tasting the 2012 Dream, it’s clear the Foreign Affair Winery is mastering this fine winemaking art. Made in a similar way to Amarone, but using Bordeaux varietals, it’s a noble blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, that results in an absolutely lovely and layered Amarone-Bordeaux aroma profile. The natural drying of the grapes produces such interesting sweet fruit aromas and flavour profiles, words don’t quite do it justice, one must enjoy for themselves. Plums, black cherry, currants, blueberry, and dark chocolate, to name a few, on the palate. Very well balanced, very well made. Enjoy now with rich Italian cuisine. Tasted January 2015. 93 points. Matt Steeves – www.quercusvino.ca

91 points – Beppi Crosariol, Wine & Spirits Columnist  The Globe and Mail:

Len Crispino, Foreign Affair’s owner, has championed the dried-grape appassi mento style best exemplified by the reds of Italy’s Veneto region. By letting grapes air dry for weeks after harvest, new, complex flavours develop along with additional alcohol from the concentrated sugars. This red blend of merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot weighs in at a formidable 14.9 per cent, yet the alcohol is well integrated into the rich, dried fruit and chocolate characters, which get a kick from baking spices. Very compelling and a fine match for the cheese course. Available in Ontario.

LCBO Vintages Release: November 8, 2014 | Enchanted 2013

Review from Michael Godel: Godello.ca Enchanted 2013, VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario (389767, $17.95, WineAlign)

Appassimento-style Sauvignon Blanc is both curious and an open target for accusations of vivid excesses. The detractor will look for swift “walls of insincerity,” the complimenter will say “I was enchanted to meet you.” Foreign Affair’s take has been injected with a cocktail of intensity; steroidal, hormonal and from concentrate. All the juicy orchard fruits are there; plum, apple, pear, nectarine, lemon, lime and grapefruit. This passes the appassimento SB test, if only and commodiously because it spreads fruit like confiture on warm toast.  Tasted October 2014  @wineaffair

LCBO Classics: November/December Collection | Gran Q 2010

Review from Rick Vansickle – Wines in Niagara Gran Q 2010 ($150, December Classics, 93 points) — This is Foreign Affair owner Len Crispino’s dedication to the late Giuseppe Quintarelli, Valpolicella’s most famous maker of Amarone wines. Quintarelli is his hero, the one who inspired him most to follow his path in Niagara. He and his wife Marisa flew to Veneto unannounced to see if they could talk to Giuseppe about making Amarone wines in Canada. Crispino was granted a meeting with the winemaker but arrived a half hour late because the winery is unmarked along a secluded road. Once he found the home and winery of Giuseppe he was made to wait a half hour (the amount of time he was late) before he got a few words with the man.

“He told me to ‘follow my dreams and you’ll get what you want,’ ” laughs Crispino. He left but not before asking for a photo, which Giuseppe insisted must be taken with his wife as well (see above). The Gran Q, made from 100% dried grapes, is one of the biggest wines I have tasted from Niagara, made from grapes (Cab Franc, Cab Sauv and Merlot) dried for an average 90 days. The wine was aged for 24-28 months in 80% new French oak. The nose is astonishing; gobs of black currant compote, rich, thick cassis, leather, graphite and sweet spices. The whopping 17.5% alc on the palate is backed up by luxurious, sweet and complex dark fruits, well-defined tannins and an array of spices that echo on the finish. Drink heartily, but serve with grilled red meat.
