Petit Verdot 2015

2015 ~ 750ml
14.3% alc./vol.

Tasting Notes

This wine has an extremely deep, dark ruby color indicating what is to come on the nose and palate.  On the nose, layers of concentrated ripe black currants, black cherry, eucalyptus, violet, hibiscus, and faint fennel and cinnamon. The palate flows with huge flavours of currants, cherry compote, baking spice and vanilla bean. The body is complex and full with firm, smooth tannins, exciting acidity, and a long rich finish.

Winemaking Notes

Petit Verdot 86%, Cabernet Franc 14%

The 2015 vintage was a slightly reduced crop due to a cold winter. The vines produced fruit with a beautiful balance of flavours with crisp acidity. The growing season was not too hot or wet which allowed very even ripening. This vintage produced grape clusters with smaller berry size resulting in a higher skin to juice ratio -producing a concentrated dark wine with intense and complex flavours and aromas. Made from 100% estate grown fruit, the grapes were hand sorted and gently pressed, then individually fermented and aged in a  French oak barrels before final blending. With 14.5% of the juice coming from grapes which were then dried in the traditional appassimento method for 60 days.

Wine and Food Pairing

Past Reviews:

Foreign Affair Petit Verdot 2012 ($50, winery, 92 points) — With Merlot suffering deeply from Ontario’s deep freeze the past two winters, many wineries are now looking at Petit Verdot as a possible single variety that could fill the gap. Viewed as a nice blender for Bordeaux-style reds, it has in recent years been showing up around the world all by its lonesome. Foreign Affair dries 15% of the grapes and ages the wine for 18 months in French oak. This is only the second time PV has been made as a single variety at Foreign Affair, the first being the 2010 vintage. It’s a pretty wine with a complex and floral nose of currants, cassis, raspberry bush and baking spices. It shows a voluptuous array of currants, cherry and cassis fruit on the palate with touches of licorice and rich spice notes. A good beam of acidity carries this wine nicely through a long finish. Consider this for long-term cellaring, 5-10 years.

Rated 90 Points by Evan Saviolidis:

Fifteen percent of the grapes for this wine were dried à la Amarone. Full bodied, this 14.5% beauty doles out raspberry, cassis, dark cherry, violets, spice, cocoa and earth. The mid-palate shows a sweet/jammy texture before the ripe tannins sweep everything up. It should age well over the next decade. Braised lamb shanks or beef ribs were made for this wine.
